Leadership is often the cornerstone of change, and TEDxJaslok Hospital brings attention to the role of transformative leadership in driving healthcare advancements. Dr Joy Desai

Director, Neurology, Convenor Sleep Subsection of Indian Academy of Neurology
Dr. Joy Desai did his MBBS from the B J Medical College, Ahmedabad in 1987 with 3 gold medals for academic excellence during this tenure. He obtained his MD in Internal Medicine with Gold Medal . He obtained DNB in Neurology from Jaslok Hospital in 1995 under the tutelage of Professor Noshir H Wadia, Dr Anil Desai and Professor Sarosh Katrak. Dr. Desai subsequently spent 3 years as a Senior Registrar at The Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel, London, UK. He worked with Professor Michael Swash & returned to India in 1999 and joined Jaslok Hospital as Consultant in Neurology. He started Epilepsy Clinic at Jaslok Hospital & performed presurgical evaluation of patients with refractory epilepsy. He conducted International Clinical Drug trials for newer antiseizure medications like Brivaracetam and Perampanel. Since 2014 he has developed a keen interest in neuroscience of sleep & its ramifications on neurological health. He advocates & promotes sleep hygiene in community .

Dr Shruti Tandan

Academic and Research Coordinator, Medicine and Critical Care Consultant at Jaslok Hospital
A graduate from Seth GS Medical College, Mumbai and post-graduate from AIIMS, New Delhi, Dr. Shruti Tandan was awarded FNB in Critical Care Medicine in 2007, after which she joined Critical Care Department at Jaslok Hospital. Dr. Tandan was awarded the Hargobind scholarship that enabled her to received super-specialty training in Hepatic Intensive Care at the Liver ITU at King’s College Hospital, London. Dr. Tandan has managed all kinds of emergencies: Burns, pancreatitis, poisoning, septicaemia with multi-organ failure, ARDS, acute and chronic respiratory failure, Obstretic emergencies Acute renal failure, Acute stroke and Acute Coronary Syndrome. Dr. Shruti Tandan is adept at management of complicated abdominal surgeries, complex cardiac surgeries, high-risk oncosurgery and neurosurgery. She has a keen interest in managing acute and chronic liver failure & post-transplant care. Dr Tandan specializes in peri-op Nutrition & targeted nutritional therapy in critically ill patients.

Dr. Aabha Nagral

Director of Deptartment of Gastroenterology at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre
Dr. Aabha Nagral is one of India’s esteemed Liver specialists with success in treating Liver disease patients all over the world with a rich experience over 30 years. She was awarded the Master of Gastroenterology Award by the Indian Society of Gastroenterology. She is known to accomplish solving many complex cases in her field of specialization including liver diseases& liver transplantation in the children & adults. Dr. Aabha has been one of the earliest people in India to focus on Hepatology & Paediatric Hepatology. She has trained from Royal Free Hospital, King’s College Hospital London & Mayo Clinic USA.She was instrumental in setting the 1st transplant program in Western India at Jaslok Hospital in 1998. She was involved in the 1st successful Paediatric Liver Transplant in Western India, Journal of Post Graduate Medicine, Indian Paediatrics, Indian Journal of Paediatrics, Acta Hematologica. She was responsible for getting the drug Trientine to India.

Dr. Ashwin Balachand Mehta

Director,Department of Cardiology
Dr. A. B. Mehta has rich experience of more than 50 years in the field of Cardiology. By thistime, he has performed and supervised more than 20,000 Angioplasties and 100,000 Angiographies.His special interests are: Complex Angioplasty, Rotablation, Laser Atherectomy,Intravascular Ultrasound(IVUS) & Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR). He has received the prestigious Padmashree Award from the President of India in 2004. He has received Life Time Achievement Award from many organisations apart from many other awards. Above all, he has received the Jaslok Ratna Award (2020); so far not given to anybody else in the history of Jaslok Hospital.He has enjoyed the position of President of World Congress of Coronary Heart Disease (1981 & 1986) & the position of President of Cardiological Society of India (1998). He has done pioneering work and was responsible for placing First Drug Eluting Stent (DES) in thecountry in May 2002.

Dr. Indraneel Raut

Additional Director, Critical Care
Dr. Indraneel Raut completed his Post-graduation in Internal Medicine (DNB) from Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre in 2004. Since then he has been working in the Department of Critical Care Medicine at Jaslok Hospital . He completed the IFCCM course offered by the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine at Jaslok Hospital & Research centre and subsequently also successfully completed his EDIC (European Diploma in Critical Care). During the Covid Pandemic he worked relentlessly in the Covid ICU and Covid Ward. He has been actively involved in the care of the Post Cardiac and Liver Transplant cases in the ICU. With sheer hard work, perseverance and never say die attitude he has saved several lives in the 18 years of his career in Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Jamshed D. Sunavala

Director, Critical Care
Dr J. D. Sunavala is the Director of Critical Care at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre and has been working in the field of Critical Care and Internal Medicine for more the 40 years.

Dr. Rajesh Parikh

Director Psychiatry & Director Medical Research
Dr. Rajesh M. Parikh is the Director of Medical Research and Hon. Neuropsychiatrist at Jaslok Hospital . He is Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Iowa, Carver College of Medicine and a former WHO Global Expert on Depression. He trained at the Seth G.S. Medical College and the K.E.M. Hospital, Mumbai and at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He has been invited to lecture at the Harvard Medical School, the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the Yale University School of Medicine and the Institute for Research in Neuroscience & Neuropsychiatry in France. He has delivered over 125 international talks & won over 200 awards in activities as diverse as photography, painting, quizzing, writing & debating. He is presently learning Sanskrit and Greek in addition to the six languages in which he is fluent. In 2021, Dr. Parikh published two national bestsellers on the COVID pandemic and on Vaccination. Both books have been critically acclaimed.

Dr. Reetu Jain

Director, BMT & Academics, Consultant Medical Oncologist and BMT physician
Dr Reetu Jain comes with an experience of over 25 years. She leads the department of Bone Marrow Transplant. The department under her lead has performed nearly 600 Bone Marrow Transplants which is highest in Maharashtra. Her team has achieved successful transplants for patients of several hematological disorders like thalassemia, aplastic anemia,Sickle cell anaemia,fanconi’s anemia to malignant diseases including Leukemias, lymphomas, multiple myeloma,neuroblastoma,Germ cell umor and sarcomas.The patient survival rates are at par with the national and international centers. She has several national & international publications to her credits and is eminent member of various globally recognized associations.

Dr. Sanjay Nagral

Director of Department of Surgical Gastroenterology at Jaslok Hospital &Research Centre
Dr.Nagral did his MBBS & MS from GS Medical College; worked at the KEM Hospital Mumbai till 1999 as Associate Professor of Surgery. He was awarded fellowship in the UK in 1996 -97 and did it in HPB surgery & liver transplantation at Kings College Hospital & Royal Free Hospital in 1997. He has 120 publications in indexed journals & contributed six textbook chapters. He was joint secretary & chairperson of liver committee of the ZTC Committee in Mumbai from 2012- 2017. He is currently chair of donor safety; outcomes committee of Western region ROTTO of Government of India. He was nominated to executive council of Declaration of Istanbul Custodian Group & has been appointed its co-chair for 2021-22 & co-chair of Ethics task force of Asian Society of Transplantation. Besides academics, Dr. Nagral writes on public health, medical ethics & organ transplant in public space. He wrote weekly column- “Second opinion” in Mumbai Mirror in 2020 / 2021 and now in the Hindustan Times.

Dr. Sudeshna Ray

Dr Ray believes in empowering women with the knowledge to decide and accept their treatment. To her every woman coming to her is important and she gives sufficient time to each one of them to decide the treatment which is best suited for her. Besides guiding pregnant women with her expert advice, she offers a full range of gynaecological services. including preventive care for a healthy women ; treatment of various gynaecological concerns -fibroids, endometriosis, abnormal bleeding, PCOS, etc. She enjoys bringing healthy babies to the world and to her the smile in the eyes of the parents and the gratitude of a treated women is what fuels her through the odd hours of continuous work. She is passionate about giving her women the most advanced form of treatment available like non-surgical options, scarless, robotic, keyhole procedures & multidisciplinary management. She is the head of the team of LIGHTHOUSE – the 360 degree care program for adolescents & young adults.

Dr. Vikram. R Lele

Director, Department of Nuclear Medicine & PET-CT
Dr. Vikram R. Lele did MD (medicine) in 1986 with 2 gold medals, followed by DRM & DNB (nuclear medicine). He got further training in Nuclear Medicine at the Johns Hopkins , USA & Germany. He was on the editorial board of European Journal of Nuclear Medicine & Molecular imaging & Indian Journal of Nuclear Medicine. He is Ex-President,Association of Nuclear medicine Physicians of India ,Nuclear cardiological Society of India & Western Chapter of Society of Nuclear medicine India. He has delivered invited lectures & orations at national and international conferences in Nuclear Medicine & authored over 28 publications & text book chapters in Nuclear Medicine in API textbook of Medicine, textbook of orthopaedics, etc. He was on the SARCAR committee, AERB,Govt. of India. He has pioneered several new tests& therapies in Nuclear Medicine in India, the first triple head Gamma Camera, first 5 ring PET CT system in India & introduced TRODAT scan for Parkinson’s disease in the country
