The word Astra holds historical and symbolic significance, representing both creation and destruction, mirroring the
capacity to dismantle barriers while forging new paths forward. In Indian traditions, Astra refers to a powerful weapon, an
archetype for brilliance and strength qualities demonstrated by women throughout their lives. Women face relentless challenges
such as wage inequality, societal expectations, and gender-based violence, yet continue to rise above and shape the world.
This makes Astra an apt theme for this year’s TEDx Women event, drawing on the celestial and transformative power
women embody.
Women, across history and cultures, have faced deep-rooted challenges while proving their ability to deconstruct stereotypes
and reconstruct equitable systems. The theme Astra was chosen to provide a platform for women to share their first-hand
experiences, inviting the audience to reflect on the struggles and resilience of women.
Like the Astra, women are protectors and warriors, breaking barriers while empowering others. They confront systemic biases
with courage and determination, transforming oppressive systems through leadership, compassion, and grace. Historically,
women have wielded their inner Astra intelligence, empathy, and persistence to fight for voting rights, workplace equality,
and justice, continuing to reshape societal norms today.
This TEDx Women event will create a space for women to speak openly about how they’ve navigated obstacles, giving voice to
global struggles and inspiring the audience to act towards gender equality. In line with Derrida’s deconstruction theory,
women use their experiences as tools to dismantle patriarchal structures, while also reconstructing a new, inclusive society.
Astra symbolises the ability to tear down barriers and rebuild a future marked by equality and strength.
Finally, Astra reminds us that women’s contributions are essential for societal progress. The event will shine a light on the
crucial roles women play in shaping the future, fostering conversations around gender equality and inspiring lasting
change.
