Theme: Upside Down

This event occurred on
November 9, 2024
Dar Es Salaam, Dar es Salaam
Tanzania

This year's TEDx theme, 'Upside Down,' invites us to embark on a journey of profound discovery by flipping the conventional perspective akin to turning an iceberg upside down, focusing on the significant, yet unseen, aspects beneath the surface. It encourages a reevaluation of our approach to ideas and problems, urging us to look beyond the apparent and explore the depths that often go unnoticed.

In a world where the superficial often dominates, this theme challenges both speakers and attendees to unearth the hidden layers, unexpected contexts, and profound lessons in seemingly ordinary stories, thereby uncovering shocking secrets and insights that defy traditional viewpoints.

Stay tuned, and join us as we turn the iceberg Upside Down!

Eric Balele

I’m a student who has experienced the power of change firsthand. In my TEDx talk, “The Beauty of Change: Embracing Life’s Upside-Down Moments,” I reflect on how change, both in everyday moments and life’s bigger transitions, plays a crucial role in shaping who we are. Through personal stories of hesitation and growth, I encourage others to view life’s uncertainties not as obstacles, but as chances for transformation and discovering new strengths.

Muhaimina Jan Mohammed

I’m currently a teacher at Dar es Salaam International Academy, where I have the opportunity to guide and learn alongside my students every day. Education has always been close to my heart, not just as a profession but as a way to empower the next generation with the skills and confidence they need to succeed. I graduated from Toronto Metropolitan University with a Bachelor of Science, where I was fortunate enough to make the Dean’s List, a recognition that reflects my passion for learning. My academic journey has shaped my teaching philosophy, emphasizing critical thinking, compassion, and the importance of a global perspective—values I try to instill in my students. Outside of the classroom, I’ve explored other ways of sharing ideas and experiences. I’ve had the privilege of previously delivering a TEDx talk, which allowed me to connect with a wider audience and explore topics that are deeply personal and meaningful to me. My book, Discovering the Can in Cancer, is a reflection of my mother’s courageous journey through cancer. Writing it was an emotional and transformative process, and I hope it serves as a source of strength and hope for others facing similar challenges. I believe in the power of storytelling—whether through teaching, writing, or speaking—to create positive change and build resilience in ourselves and those around us.
